In this post about what to see in Mykonos We want to make a comprehensive summary of what has been our experience in one of the best Greek Islands, in addition to giving you recommendations and tips to fully enjoy this incredible island that we have been lucky to meet on the trip to Greece in 32 days, which has also become one of the essential places to see in Greece.
This post was born after having been several days in Mykonos and finding that it is not too interesting to make a daily summary of our stay, since at many times of the day we only dedicate ourselves to relax and enjoy Chora, its capital in a way much quieter, so we think it is much better, in addition to much more interesting, to summarize all the aspects that we believe are more important to consider in a trip to Mykonos, which includes of course, what to see and do in Mykonos.

What to see in Mykonos

How to go to Mykonos

Going to Mykonos is much easier than it might seem initially, in addition to quite adjusted in price, especially considering the sometimes topical, that the Greek Islands are one of the most expensive places in the world.

There are several ways to go from Athens to Mykonos, depending on the time, prices and schedules that fit your needs:
- Ferry: the Piraeus to Mykonos ferry It is one of the most chosen forms of transport to go from Athens to Mykonos, since depending on the ferry you choose, you can reach the island in a journey between 2:30 hours by fast ferry or 5 hours, the normal ferry.
You can book your ferry to the Greek islands here.
Keep in mind that if you don't have a rental car, you can go from Athens to Piraeus by public transport, with the subway being the most recommended option in this case or a private transfer.
- Airplane: This is the least initially valued option by the walking distance, but that can be very interesting if it fits you in schedules and prices, being able to fly from Athens to Mykonos in less than 1 hour for very competitive prices, being sometimes 20 euros the journey.
- Excursion / Tour: Another option if you are staying in Athens and want to know more about the place, is to book this Getaway to Mykonos for 2 or more days or this 4-day Getaway to Mykonos and Santorini.

Athens to Mykonos Ferry

As we mentioned before, according to our experience in this Greece for free, the option to go in ferry to Mykonos, is a great option. We leave you much more information in the post we wrote about how to go from Athens to Mykonos.

Keep in mind that if you arrive in Mykonos by ferry you will arrive at the new port of Chora, about 5 kilometers from the capital, so if you do not have a car, you must take some type of transport to get to the center.
For more information about transfers to other islands you can read this post on how to go from Mykonos to Santorini.

Best time to travel to Mykonos

Although we would dare to say that any time is good to travel to Mykonos, without a doubt, opting for the months of spring-summer and the end of summer-autumn, would be the best choice, not only for the weather, which is usually sunny, but also because all the infrastructures are at full capacity, in addition to having more extensive schedules, such as ferries, which in winter tend to limit their schedules a lot.

Something to keep in mind is that in the months of July and August, being high season, there are usually many more people, so it is also advisable to take it into account and book in advance the accommodation in Mykonos, the ferry to Mykonos and Even the rental car.

Best time to visit Mykonos

How many days are needed to get to know Mykonos

After our experience on the island, we would recommend a minimum of 2 days to know with some tranquility Chora, its capital and then dedicate a full day to know the surroundings, be it some of the villages, beaches or a combination of both.
If you have more time, having 3 or 4 days would be ideal to get to know and enjoy Mykonos in a much more relaxed way.

Best hotel in Mykonos. Where do i stay?

One of the big questions when you travel to Mykonos is the choice of accommodation. After several days touring the island, we would recommend choosing the area, according to your preferences or what you are looking for in your stay on the island.
Something to keep in mind is that against the topic we mentioned earlier about the high prices on islands such as Mykonos or Santorini, in both it is possible to find accommodation, even in the center of the capital, for about 60-80 euros a night in a double room The important thing is to book early, so you have more options.
- Chora: This is for us the best choice of accommodation in Mykonos. Although the capital of Mykonos, Chora, is relatively large, we would choose an area close to the bus station, since in addition to being quiet, it is within walking distance of the major attractions of the city and also, in case of having a car, You will be very close to one of the free parkings in the city.

Accommodation in Chora

We stayed at the Hotel Olympia, with an unbeatable location, next to the mills and a few meters from Little Venice, in addition to having free parking just 50 meters away.
For more information on the best hotels and areas we recommend you read this post of where to stay in Mykonos.

- Beaches: This option is perfect if you are looking to be near the "party" in Mykonos. According to what we could see, in most beaches, the usual thing is that there is music and atmosphere until the wee hours of the morning, so if you are looking for a quiet and relaxed place, this may not be the best option to stay.
Although of course, it's great to spend a day at any of them.

Accommodation on the Mykonos Beaches
The options in this case go through Paraga, Paradise, Super Paradise, among others.

- Accommodation in the vicinity of Chora: This option is perfect if you do not mind taking the car every day to move or go to lunch and dinner somewhere nearby or even go to Chora to enjoy the capital at any time of the day.
For us it is the least successful option if you are only going to be on the island for a few days, although of course, it is a very personal vision.

Another option is to choose to stay in an AirBnb apartment, where you have a discount of 35 euros through this link.

Car rental in Mykonos

In our experience, having a rental car in Mykonos is practically essential to move with total freedom of schedules and movements. In addition to this, you can also have the option to rent a motorcycle or quad, very common in the most tourist Greek islands.

Although of course it is not the same to drive through the Greek islands than the continental zone, in many cases you will find the same situations, so we leave you the post in which we talk about the rental car in Athens, in which You can see all the tips we believe are interesting to make your experience much more enjoyable.

In addition to the rental car, the quad or the motorcycle, you can opt for public transport, which mostly links the most famous beaches of Mykonos with Chora and leaves from Fabrika Square.

What to see in Mykonos

Although later we will detail different recommended routes, depending on the time you have to visit the island, first we want to leave you a selection of things to see and do in Mykonos.

Chora, the capital of Mykonos

Without any doubt, Chora or Hora, as the capital of Mykonos is known, is also an essential stop on the island, the best place to start to know and live the essence of the Greek islands, leaving you to love for the "Little Venice", its famous mills, the neighborhood of Kastro, the Orthodox churches and also and of course, its nightlife.

Windmills Kato Milli

This is probably the icon of the island, besides being one of the most essential places to see in Mykonos. Used in the past to grind the grain of the island thanks to the winds that usually make a presence on the coasts, they are today one of the biggest attractions of the island, in addition to a museum, since some have been rebuilt, to show The travelers its great history.
Highlights the Windmills Kato Milli from the upper area of Chora, with incredible views of the sea and one of the most beautiful sunsets on the island, which we will talk about later.

What to see in Mykonos. Windmills Kato Milli

Boni's Windmill

Another of the mills that you can not miss is the Molino Boni's, located in the upper area of Chora, which stands out for its incredible white color, in addition to the incredible views it gives, both during the day and at sunset, everything the center of Chora.

Boni's Windmill. Thank you very much Majo and Andrés for the photo!

Kastro neighborhood. Matogianni, Enoplon, Dynameon and Mitropoleos streets

Kastro is probably one of the most beautiful places not only in Greece, but in the world. Narrow alleys, which highlight the houses of an unpolluted white, colored windows and bugamvillas as an ornament, make up this neighborhood, in which the branded stores are mixed with charming restaurants and venues, which travel thousands of travelers every day, many of them at the wrong time for being cruise passengers who leave their ship for a few hours to know this beautiful place that has become one of the places what to see in Mykonos more recommended.
Although the most advisable thing is to lose yourself in its streets without a map, something that we assure you will happen in a story you take two minutes, since it is practically impossible to conserve the course in the lattice of little streets, Matogianni, Enoplon, Dynameon and Mitropoleos are the main streets that you We recommend not getting lost before starting a route through the things to do in Mykonos more essential

Kastro, the most essential neighborhood to see in Mykonos

What to see in Mykonos

Although any time is good to visit Kastro, if you want to do it with peace of mind, we advise you to get up early and walk through its streets before 7 in the morning, at which time you can enjoy the place almost alone. It is about 9-10 in the morning, depending on the cruise ships you see in the new port, when the cruise passengers will arrive in Kastro and begin to invade the streets at a rapid pace, trying to take the maximum images in their retinas and cameras, something that taking into account the narrowness of its streets, it sometimes becomes a bit overwhelming.

Streets of Mykonos

It is for this reason that morning and afternoon, before sunset, are the best hours to tour Kastro, if you want to enjoy this amazing place without people.

Panagia Paraportiani Church

Known for being one of the most photographed places on the island, the Panagia Paraportiani Church is without a doubt one of the most impressive places to see in Mykonos, especially for the place where it is located and more if you go first thing in the morning or at sunset, when the sun begins to hide over the horizon, at the back of the church and the sun seems to be reflected in the upper part of the church, trying to stay a few more minutes, as a gift to the traveler who has arrived up there

Panagia Paraportiani Church

Little venice

Another of the most essential places to see in Mykonos and for which every traveler ends up happening on occasion is Little Venice, one of the most photographed areas of the island, in which its houses built practically on the sea stand out, as in Venice and hence his name, "Little Venice".
The best area to enjoy it is from the small beach between the Windmills Kato Milli and Little Venice, from where the views are really wonderful, at any time of the day, but especially at the time of sunset.

Little Venice in Mykonos

Little Venice in Mykonos

Note that in many of the houses, on the ground floor, entertainment venues have been installed, such as cocktail bars, from which to enjoy a unique sunset, as well as some art rooms, where you can enjoy crafts and Works by many artists who have settled in this area of the city, attracted by the charm of the sea and unique views.

Walk around Little Venice in Mykonos at sunset

Old Port of Mykonos

Strolling through the Old Port is another of the things to do in Mykonos that you cannot miss. Located in the most central area, just at the back of Little Venice, it is from here that small boats leave to other areas of the island and to the Island of Delos, another of the places to see in Mykonos.

Old Port of Mykonos

The Petros Mykonos Pelican

As a curiosity we will tell you that in Mykonos, one of the most famous inhabitants is a pelican: the Petros Pelican, who arrived on the island in 1954 and after a fisherman healed his wounds, he never wanted to leave the island, becoming one of the symbols of Mykonos.
Petros died in 1986 and today, through the streets of Chora it is possible to cross with the new pelican that Chora has adopted in his memory and as a successor of what was an icon of the island.
They say that seeing it gives luck and assures you to return to the island. We did not see it, so we will have to go back to look for it and thus ensure our return to the island.

Charming corners in Mykonos

We leave you a map with the places to see in Chora, the capital of Mykonos, taking into account that our great recommendation is to get lost in Chora, aimlessly and solely for the purpose of walking and enjoying one of the most magical places in the world.
Something to assess is that you can reach all these places on foot, including the highest area where Boni's Windmill is located, so if you have a car, we advise you to leave it in a parking lot, either free or paid, and choose walk.

Sunsets in Mykonos

One of the most incredible moments you can live in Mykonos, is the time of sunset, at which point the most iconic points of the capital, become authentic hotbeds of people in search of the best views.
We leave you a selection of those that are for us the best places to enjoy a sunset in Mykonos:
- Little Venice: Without a doubt, one of the best places to watch the sunset in Mykonos. We recommend you enjoy it from the beach, in one of its banks or in one of the terraces in Little Venice.

Sunset in Little Venice

- Windmills Kato Milli: Another of the ideal places where you can see an unforgettable sunset, although it is also one of the busiest. We recommend you to come with some time and enjoy the views both in the area of the mills and in the back, from where the views are also incredible.

Windmills Kato Milli

- Boni's Windmill: Less crowded than the previous two, Boni's Windmill is another of the places to see in Mykonos most recommended at the time of sunset. In addition, right next to it there is a mill that is not restored and a church, which are also beautiful frames to enjoy this moment.

Boni's Windmill

- 180 Degrees Sunset Bar: This place was a discovery of Majo and Andrés from The Journey of Your Life, with whom we met in Meteora and also in Mykonos and with whom we shared an unforgettable sunset at the 180 Degrees Sunset Bar, becoming one of the most essential places to see in Mykonos.
The price of the drinks is about 15 euros, depending on the one you choose, but without a doubt, it is a perfect place to enjoy one of the best sunsets in Mykonos.

Views from the 180 Degrees Sunset Bar

Views from the 180 Degrees Sunset Bar

We leave you a selection of you that are for us the 4 ideal points from which to watch a sunset in Mykonos.

Night in Mykonos

Although Mykonos is known by many as one of the liveliest islands in Greece, in our case we cannot speak from experience, since we did not go out any of the days in search of that aspect.
What we did several nights is to go out to the center of Chora, to enjoy its illuminated streets, which except for the most central ones, where the greatest animation is concentrated, you can enjoy practically in solitude.

Night in Mykonos

Something that surprised us a lot is that both the restaurants and the shops have a fairly late closing time and that is that even the days we returned to the hotel later than 1 in the morning, most were still open.

Year Mera

Ano Mera is the only town in the interior of the island and one of the things what to do in Mykonos essential, especially if you have more than one day.
Located just 7 kilometers from Chora it is worth spending a couple of hours to get lost among its streets, much quieter than those of Chora and its huge central square, in addition to eating in one of its most recommended restaurants.

Ano Mera in Mykonos

Armenistis lighthouse

This is another of the most interesting places to see in Mykonos, in addition to Chora, Ano Mera and some of its best known beaches. You have to be careful on the journey by car, since the access road is a fairly important climb, so you have to take it easy especially if you take a car with little engine.
It must be said that the views both from the lighthouse and from the surroundings and during the journey, are really spectacular and already justify the journey of several kilometers from Chora.
Keep in mind that you can park perfectly on the ascent road or in the light of the lighthouse and this visit can be perfectly combined with the Agios Sostis beach, which is very close.

Armenistis lighthouse

Delos Island

This is one of the things to do in Mykonos more recommended and also one of the most made excursions from the island, which you can book here.
Known for being the place that houses one of the best known archaeological sites in Greece, Delos Island is a perfect getaway from Mykonos if you have an extra day to visit it or a morning.
In our case we did not go, since we were only in Mykonos for 3 days, but we think it is a great option if you have more time.

Tour the roads of Mykonos in search of typical scenes from the Greek islands

Another of the things to do in Mykonos most recommended is to get lost on the roads of Mykonos. We would not be able to give you specific locations, since the only route along the Mykonos beaches that we will discuss later, will take you along roads with incredible views, dotted with many churches, which seem to be taken from a travel catalog.
It is for this reason that we believe that at least one of the days you are in Mykonos, it is very worth having a car, motorcycle or quad to be able to take a tour of the interior and thus know this other perspective of the island.

Places to see in Mykonos

We leave you what we believe is a selection of some of the best things to do in Mykonos.

The best beaches of Mykonos

Keep in mind that the beach is one of the biggest attractions of Mykonos, although in our opinion, they are not much less typical postcard beaches to which we are accustomed in other parts of the world, although many are a real haven of peace, even in high season and have incredibly transparent waters.

Paraga

The Paraga beach is probably one of the most visited of Mykonos, next to the next one, since it is the closest to Chora, besides being ample and having parking in which to leave the car. There is an area where there are sun loungers and umbrellas and it is quite sheltered from the wind.
It is on this beach when we begin to see something that we do not like too much and that most of the coastline is occupied by hotels, bars and restaurants, something that we believe should be avoided. Although it is very good to provide services, finding a beach completely surrounded by locals, hammocks, sunbeds, which practically do not allow access to the beach, is at least for us, quite unpleasant.

Paraga Beach in Mykonos

Paradise

Paradise is the beach that is located right next to Paraga and where you can go by car, on the inside or walk along the coast, on a route of about 700 meters, highly recommended for the views you have of the two Beaches. To take into account that there is a section in which due to the shape of the rocks, if you have vertigo, it becomes somewhat complicated.
From 11 in the morning, in Paradise the majority of bars that are in the surrounding area play music and start the party, so according to what you are looking for, this may not be the best option, although it is considered as one of the Mykonos best beaches.
They also have sun loungers hammock service.

Paradise beach in Mykonos

Super paradise

This beach is about 7 kilometers from Paradaise. If you come by car, keep in mind that the last section of 200 meters has a very exaggerated slope, so if you go with a car with little engine, you should take it easy, just like if you come by motorcycle.
As the beaches that we have visited before, the majority of the public is young and looking for a good atmosphere and party, although from our experience, this is somewhat quieter, perhaps because it is the one that is farthest, although from what they tell us from 7:30 in the afternoon, it becomes an outdoor disco.

Kalafati

This is another of the most recommended beaches and another of the places to see in Mykonos.
Quite quieter than the previous ones, it has a hammock and umbrella service, although it has a much larger piece of beach, where you can put your towel freely.

Kalafati Beach in Mykonos

Kalo Livadi

Following the road, along the coast, in less than 300 meters you reach Kalo Livadi, another of the best beaches in Mykonos, which is much larger than the previous ones, has sun loungers and hammocks and although it is much more crowded, It is much quieter than the previous ones, since the public is usually more familiar.
There are different options of restaurants and bars in the area.

Kalo Livadi beach in Mykonos

Loulos

This small cove is for us one of the treasures of Mykonos and is that although it is not by far the prettiest, it is the one that has no infrastructure, besides being the smallest and so far, the one we have found It has the most transparent water.
You can park directly on the road, from where you have to go down some small rock stairs that take you directly to this beautiful cove.

Loulos beach in Mykonos

Elia

This beach is also larger than the previous ones and has a hammock and sun loungers service, restaurant and ATM.

Elia Beach in Mykonos

Kapari

Kapari Beach, located 6 kilometers from Chora, in a kind of peninsula, is probably for us the best of the island's beaches and another of the most essential places to see in Mykonos.
In addition to being a fairly small cove, in which there are usually not many people, the color of the water is spectacular and you can leave the car approximately 500 meters, on a dirt road, from which you can access the last access area to the cove, which is about 100 meters that you have to travel through rock.

Kapari Beach in Mykonos

Agios Stephanos

This small cove is located just over 1 kilometer from the new port of Mykonos and has services such as hammocks, bars and restaurants, right next door. It is also much quieter than the best known as Paradise or Super Paradise, so it can be a great option if you are looking for something quiet, but close to Chora.

Agios Stephanos beach in Mykonos

Agios Sostis

For us, without a doubt, the best beach on the island and one of the places to see in Mykonos. It does not have any type of services, except for a taverna, called Quique, which is very famous and is located a little higher, right next to the beach and a small cove that is accessed by stairs. It does not have parking space, although you can leave the car on the side of the road, always ensuring that it does not disturb.
As an extra comment that the Quique taverna, although eaten quite well, prices are quite high, even comparing them with those you can find in expensive restaurants in the center of Chora.

Agios Sostis beach in Mykonos

Although there are more beaches in Mykonos, we leave you a selection of those that are for us the best, within which we visit and that we believe, would also be some of the most suitable to visit if it is the first time you travel to the island.

Routes through Mykonos

The most important thing to keep in mind when planning a trip to Mykonos or a route around the island, is to know how many days are necessary to know Mykonos or how many days you can or want to dedicate to the island.
In our experience, we would recommend 3 days, to combine a cultural and relaxing route, although with two days you can also see the most important and interesting of the island, in addition to taking some quieter hours on one of the beaches.
In addition, it is important to take into account the reason for your trip, as we will also discuss later in the tips for traveling to Mykonos. Having this point clear will be much easier to decide what to see in Mykonos and adapt the route to your preferences.

What to do in Mykonos

1-day route in Mykonos

If your trip to Mykonos is one day, we recommend focusing on Chora, its capital, visiting its most tourist places. A route through the town will take you a full day, in which we also recommend you not to forget to enjoy a unique sunset in one of the places that we previously recommended, preferably in Little Venice or the Kato Milli Windmills.
As we mentioned earlier, in Chora, you will be able to know some of the most essential places to see in Mykonos.

1-day route in Mykonos

2-day route in Mykonos

If you have two days to visit Mykonos, a great option is to dedicate the first day to Chora, to enjoy all the things to do in Mykonos more essential and the second day, dedicate it to the interior area of the island, visiting Ano Mera and some beach or if you prefer, dedicating the whole day to one of the beaches that you like the most.

What to see in Mykonos

In this case, if you like the busiest beaches with atmosphere, you can choose between the Paradise, Super Paradise or Paraga beaches, which besides being near Chora, have restaurant, bar and sun loungers and parasols.
If you prefer something quieter you can choose Kapari or Loulos, two of the quietest beaches on the island and that for us, have been a discovery and one of the places to see in Mykonos.

Also, enjoy each day of a sunset in a different place like Little Venice, the Kato Milli Windmills or a place like the 180 Degrees Sunset Bar.

3-day route in Mykonos

In our experience, this would be the ideal time to get to know the most essential places to see in Mykonos, in addition to enjoying a relaxing day.
In this case we recommend you to do the same route as the proposal for a 2-day route and the last day to dedicate it to enjoy again the places that you liked most of the island or make a route through some of the beaches that you have It is pending to know and that we include in this same post.

3-day route in Mykonos

Best tours / excursions to travel to the island of Mykonos

Although you can arrive and tour Mykonos perfectly for free, if you are in Athens and want to know more about the island and all the places to see in Mykonos, we recommend this Mykonos Getaway for 2 or more days or this 4-day Getaway to Mykonos and Santorini

What to do in Mykonos

Tips for traveling to Mykonos

- We believe that the most important thing at the moment you decide to travel to Mykonos is to be clear if you want to know as much as possible about the island, in addition to relaxing or just want to relax and enjoy the beach. They are two totally different travel concepts and depending on what you want to carry out or whatever you want, you should plan a route or another, as well as some places to see in Mykonos and others.

Color in the streets of Mykonos

- As we mentioned before, making a route along the beaches or the interior of the island by car is highly recommended, as it passes through charming roads and paths, dotted by houses with the typical Mykonos architecture and incredible churches.
- That said, it is also important to know that the roads are not in very good condition, so if you take normal tourism, it is best to be careful and take it easy.
- Mykonos usually carries the topic of being a very crowded place, especially in high season. We cannot deny the obvious and it is that Mykonos is one of the most visited places in Greece, besides being a key point of many of the cruises that cross the Greek Islands, so many days disembark thousands of people to know Chora and the surroundings .
That said, we also have to say that if you want to enjoy many things to do in Mykonos practically alone, it is possible. You just have to get up early or avoid the busiest hours, in addition to the most tourist places and we assure you that you can enjoy Mykonos in all its splendor.

What to do in Mykonos

- Keep in mind that drawing a route to visit the places to see in Mykonos is practically impossible, since at the moment you cross two streets, the most normal thing is that you have missed. For this reason, we advise you to forget the map, using it only to locate the most famous points and then get lost in the streets of Chora.
- Contrary to what Mikonos may seem, it doesn't have to be one of the most expensive islands. If you know more or less search the sites, you can find places to eat or buy much cheaper than you imagine. For example, if you buy water in the kiosks, you will never pay more than 0.50 euros for the small bottle and one euro for the large bottle.

¡Totalmente recomendable!
